You know those moments when you are scrolling through Pinterest and you see this AMAZING wedding dress. You immediately start day dreaming about wearing it, walking down the aisle, dancing in it, twirling.. well you get the picture.
I had one of these moments about five months ago when I stumbled across Gwendolynne. A Australian Dress Designer with a distinct eye for detail and class with an old glamour vibe.
On a whim I decided since I could not be married again because.. well.. I LOVE my husband, I was going to photograph the dress! I had been planning a Chicago shoot for some time and was already in the process of selecting vendors. Gwendolynne seemed like the perfect fit!
Fingers crossed, hopes high, and good energy out in the world I reached out to the designer. I had little faith in myself and I kept thinking, "What a long shot. This amazing designer working with a photographer from Green Bay, WI".
Turns out Gwendolynne was happy to hear from me and excited to collaborate. To say I was over the moon is an understatement. I not only would get to photograph my dream dress, the Phoebe, but I was also granted the Frances and the Teressa. So far everything was coming together beautifully!
The day of the shoot, Jamie ( Jamie Kempen Photography) and Sara ( Sara June Photography LLC) were running around with me like mad women. We had hair and make secured for FIVE models. Sara had planned a boudoir styled shoot the same weekend and we decided to all collaborate together! What a good move this was. As the day winded down each model tried on their dress. The Phoebe was the last of the three and to my dismay did not fit any of the models. I was fear struck. I was sad. THE ONE dress that had inspired my whole shoot ended up being the one I would not get to photograph. Thinking fast, I tried the dress on for a second time ( ok who wouldn't try on their dream dress upon arrival!!). The dress fit. I was in hair and makeup and before I could walk in my heels I was modeling. Sara and Jamie were kind enough to take lead as photographer and photographed the gown, with ME as the model.
This was clearly an out of body experience as I do not like being photographed and spend 100% of my time behind the camera. However, I knew I wanted Gwendolynne to have beautiful images of this dress and if this was how it had to happen.. so be it! Needless to say the shoot was amazing, the girls were amazing, and as hard as it is for me to say I also looked amazing in my modeling stunt! Thank you Sara and Jamie for photographing my dream dress.
The shoot evolved over time as we wandered around downtown. Our original intentions to photography at Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Ave were squashed when we found out a REAL wedding was happening. We were immediately kicked off the grounds. Backup plan: USE THE URBAN setting as it was.
So we did!
